UMAINE Cooperative Education Proposal

Gayle Zydlewski, University of Maine, Orono ME.

Abstract

The co-location of NOAA Fisheries Marine Field Station and the University of Maine, in Orono, ME, together with the recognition of a common need, which is to provide research/learning experiences for the next generation of marine scientists, has created an ideal situation for involving undergraduate students in government sponsored fisheries research.  This proposal will establish funding for interns from the University of Maine to work in Orono, and possibly other locations throughout the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, on fisheries research projects. The impact of this proposal will be to broaden student’s learning experience, through the establishment of academic/government scientist mentoring relationships, and better prepare students for entering the fisheries workforce as graduates.
