Understanding the Economic Structure of the Gulf of Maine Lobster Industry

The project will provide the data, analysis and analytical tools necessary to evaluate how
profitability of the Gulf of Maine Lobster fishery may be affected by changes in lobster
abundance, input and output prices, regulations such as effort reduction, and changes in fishing
practices such as shifting production to seasons when lobster quality and price are higher. Data
collection will be done primarily through in-person interviews. Data will be analyzed and
developed into a synthesis report that will be made available to federal and state level managers,
industry organizations, and the public. Detailed data will be made available to NMFS. In
addition the project will develop analytical vessel level profit simulators that can be used to
evaluate how profitability at the vessel level is affected by changes in input and output levels and
prices, catch and catch rates, etc.
